Fear grips traders and the VIX pops 46%
I like buying the dip as much as anybody, and it has proven to be a really good strategy over the last eight years. But yesterday was not a day to buy the dip. The internals did not show an anemic sell-off that was going to quickly subside and then rise back up into the close.
There was no 3:30pm Ramp job to save the day.
The VIX was never crushed.
There was even a 24% move in the T2108 indicator which measures the percentage of stocks that trade above their 40-day moving average. Now only 36% of stocks are above their 40-day moving average. While the rest simply struggle.
The less positions you have the better. Now is not the time to get long and heavy, now is not the time to predict the end of the world.
Now is the time to manage risk, take fewer chances and let price action settle in on one direction or another and then trade accordingly.

Welcome to Swing Trading the Stock Market Podcast!
I want you to become a better trader, and you know what? You absolutely can!
Commit these three rules to memory and to your trading:
#1: Manage the RISK ALWAYS!
#2: Keep the Losses Small
#3: Do #1 & #2 and the profits will take care of themselves.
That’s right, successful swing-trading is about managing the risk, and with Swing Trading the Stock Market podcast, I encourage you to email me (ryan@shareplanner.com) your questions, and there’s a good chance I’ll make a future podcast out of your stock market related question.
In this podcast episode, Ryan talks about how he uses profit multiples for taking profits on his swing-trades, and how not everyone of your trades that are winners will be 2:1 or 3:1 multiples of the amount that you risked on the trade.
Be sure to check out my Swing-Trading offering through SharePlanner that goes hand-in-hand with my podcast, offering all of the research, charts and technical analysis on the stock market and individual stocks, not to mention my personal watch-lists, reviews and regular updates on the most popular stocks, including the all-important big tech stocks.
