Hey, I’m Ryan Mallory and this is my Swing Trading the Stock Market podcast. I’m here to teach you how to trade in a complex, ever changing world of finance.
0:16
Learn what it means to trade profitably and consistently, managing risk, avoiding the pitfalls of trading, and most importantly, to let those winners run wild.
0:25
You can succeed at the stock market and I’m ready to show you how. Hey everybody, this is Ryan Mallory with shareplanner.com.
0:33
Swing Trading the Stock Market. And today’s episode, definitely a different type of podcast episode than I than what I’ve ever done before.
0:42
And this one is going to be on I’ve I’ve actually learned a new word from a listener.
0:46
I’ve never actually heard the word nootropics before. I actually looked it up to see if it was some kind of multi level marketing scheme, but no, it’s not it’s a supplement.
0:53
I, I’ve always just called them supplements.
0:56
I’ve never actually heard the word nootropics, but any case, we’re going to be talking about this and how it relates to trading.
1:02
Is there anything that I that I take that helps me to maybe have a little bit of an edge on the market here?
1:08
I know it sounds kind of weird because we’re talking about things we put in our body and some how that translates to a trading edge, but I’m always looking for different takes and, and different topics as it pertains to swing trading.
1:17
I thought this was a pretty unique 1.
1:20
So for the purposes of the show, I’m going to call this listener Lucille. I always try to give them a good Florida name, Florida redneck name, since I I grew up in Florida and consider myself born and raised redneck.
1:30
So Lucille writes, Well, first of all, she gives me a pretty good subject line to ask me, is there any secret supplements boosting your trading game?
1:38
Lucille says.
1:43
Hey Ryan, fan of the show. I’ve been binge listening lately and it got me thinking.
1:48
You’re always sharp and on top of your game and then made me wonder, are you taking any supplements to give you a trading edge?
1:55
I know it might sound a little bit out there, but I’ve heard whispers about traders using nootropics.
1:59
There’s that word or other brain boosting supplements to stay focused during those long market hours.
2:05
Anything to that? Or is it just good old fashioned coffee and grinding that keeps you at top of your game?
2:11
If you are taking something, we’d love to hear what that is and what’s working for you and if not, what’s your secret?
2:16
The same mentally sharp when the markets are going crazy. I’ve been struggling a lot to keep the emotions under control and hoping that you might have some
2:22
insights into how to better do that. Thanks for keeping it real with us and all the best.
2:27
Sincerely Lucille. OK, so I think there’s a lot to talk about with this one.
2:32
I’m excited about this because there’s some experimenting that I’ve been doing with this lately. Now, anytime you’re talking about stuff that that that you’re taking or supplements or whatever, you
2:40
got to do a disclaimer. And for me personally, it’s that’s important to do just in the sense that I’m not a nutritionist.
2:47
A lot of the information that I have found that I have used for myself, I found it simply through doing research on the Internet.
2:53
So what’s good for me may not be good for you. And as always, definitely consult with your doctor or your physician before you’re doing it.
3:01
Do not take anything that I’m saying here about supplements as being medically relevant or good for you.
3:09
I’m just telling you my experience, what I’m doing and how it has helped me. So a few months ago, I started looking into to the new tropics.
3:18
I’m not a person that wants to take like, you know, the pharmaceutical stuff. I know a lot of people on Wall Street, they’ll take Adderall or they’ll get some kind of a drug, a
3:27
prescription drug they probably shouldn’t even have in the 1st place to help them in the stock market, whether it’s to be able to focus more, to pay attention or to, to lessen the emotions.
3:37
For me, I was just more of just, you know, what kind of stuff can I find that Sprouts? And that’s where I got all my stuff from with Sprouts.
3:43
No, that is not an endorsement. I’m just telling you where I got it from.
3:47
But even still taking some of these supplements, which we’ll get to in just a second, I don’t think that they’re really the end all cure all for, you know, trading issues or, or problems or
3:59
difficulties that you might be having with your training. My wife, I’ve been married to my wife for since 2021, so a little over three years and she’s been
4:10
the best thing that ever happened in my life. I love her to pieces and she’s definitely made me more aware of the things that I’m putting into my
4:18
body. For instance, before I met her, I probably consumed 5 or 6 diet Mountain Dews a day.
4:23
Well, today I don’t drink mountain Dews anymore, not because, you know, she, she beat it out of me or anything like that.
4:30
She just encouraged me to, to look more into what I’m drinking and the, and the kind, some of the poisons that we’re putting into our body.
4:35
So when you take diet Mountain Dew, they got all these fake sugars. And in fact, I’ve even read in some places where the sugars in the regular Mountain Dew are probably
4:47
not even as bad for you as it is in the diet. And let me tell you, I love Mountain Dew, love it.
4:53
But the further I get away from it, the less that I can drink of it. It actually hurts.
4:58
Now, if I were to have a drink or or a glass of Mountain Dew, if I go to Costco and get the dollar 50 hot dog, that’s a whole other thing they’re eating the hot dog gives me brain fog instantly.
5:08
But the feeling of that syrupy flavors of of Mountain Dew, it also messes with me as well. So getting off of that, it was important.
5:15
I think a lot of it came down to what did I get off of? One of the other things that I did is processed foods.
5:22
I think processed foods are horrible for me and I think it also contributes to brain fog and just a little bit of a like demotivating feelings.
5:30
For example, all my life I have eating Boar’s Head Turkey on my sandwiches. I can’t remember a time in my adult life where I did not buy Boar’s Head.
5:41
And Boar’s Head is processed foods, but it’s also not good for you. In fact, they’ve been in the news having all sorts of problems with their facilities and just
5:49
absolute grotesque conditions and recalls of their products. But what I ended up doing and this again, this is, you know, within the past year, I went and bought
5:58
a meat slicer and I go to Costco and I get the Turkey breast that hasn’t been sliced, that’s not processed at all.
6:03
It’s just pure organic Turkey. And I stick that sucker right into the meat slicer and I make my sandwiches with that.
6:11
My wife makes homemade bread. I know that’s kind of like the the big popular thing right now, but she’s not going back on that.
6:18
She, she makes 3 loaves every every week for the family and I don’t think I could go back to regular bread because the difference is just stunning.
6:25
But she makes 3 loaves of sourdough bread a week. We use it.
6:29
Got a family of five. So there’s a lot of eaters use the, the Turkey that I slice on it.
6:34
So all those things, they’re not nootropics or supplements, but they are changes to the lifestyle that I think are important to be able to get some of the other toxins or some of the bad stuff out
6:44
of your system. Now, how does all this stuff relate to trading?
6:47
We’re going to get to that as well. In the mornings, I drink coffee again.
6:51
I make sure that the coffee that I use, you know, just isn’t like coated with a whole bunch of bad stuff making.
6:58
I’m not a scientist in all this stuff. I rely a lot on my wife’s expertise.
7:02
But she found, I think it was called like Life Booster. I don’t even know if that’s the correct name of it.
7:07
Yeah, it’s, it’s Life Boost coffee. That’s the name of it.
7:10
And it’s an organic coffee and it’s really good. It’s probably the best coffee I’ve ever had before, but also requires that you get a barista
7:16
machine, which I have. I have a barista machine at home, paid for it.
7:19
It’s I think that’s probably like a $500 investment. The meat slicers like a $300.00 investment.
7:24
But in the process, if you’re not going to Starbucks, you’re saving a lot of money by having those machines at home, saving a lot of money, not paying $15 a pound for horse head Turkey.
7:34
And instead I’m paying 479, I think, per pound for the Turkey from Costco. So there’s definitely some savings there.
7:43
And then in the afternoon, I’ll have sweet tea. I start to feel like around the 2:00 to 3:00 time period, I’ll start to get a little bit tired.
7:51
So I’ll get a glass of unsweetened tea. Now, being from the South, I love sweet tea.
7:56
Go to Publix, get that sweet tea or you get a Chick-fil-A and get that sweet tea, man, that stuff is good.
8:02
Or if you just want a real like hallucinary kind of experience, you go get the McDonald’s sweet tea. But I don’t get either of those.
8:09
I just drink unsweetened, no sugar and and that’s hard to do. I love sugar.
8:13
But having that morning coffee, afternoon tea, I don’t have as much of like AI might feel tired if I don’t have the afternoon tea, but I’m not going to be getting headaches from it.
8:22
So completely off of the Cokes and sodas, I think that’s important. I, I don’t think as a traders sitting in front of a monitor or monitors all day long, just chugging
8:31
back the Diet Mountain Dew is a good thing at all. Another thing that I think is really helpful for traders just to not have the brain fog to be able
8:41
to think clearly is at least walking a little bit in the morning. We have a little loop in our neighborhood that I live in and I’ll walk around the loop, you know, in
8:49
the mornings at sometimes, usually the times are different, but I’ll walk around the loop and it’s like 1/2 mile and it kind of gets, I don’t, I don’t walk with any, any headphones on.
8:59
I don’t walk with, you know, the phone in my hand looking at the futures market or anything like that.
9:04
Instead I am just focused on walking. I’m taking into my surroundings, you know, enjoying the birds chirping a little bit, getting annoyed
9:12
at the neighbor that never mows his grass, stuff like that. And then in the evenings, usually my wife will ask, hey, you want to go for a walk And I’ll usually
9:19
say yes because I know that’s good for me as well. And then two to three times a week, I say two to three.
9:24
My goal is to work out with weights 3 * a week, but often times it’s twice, which I need to up that to three.
9:29
That’s a goal of mine. Got to get back into the swing of the things being more consistent with the weights.
9:34
And I don’t have any excuse. I have a, you know, workout equipment right here in the house.
9:38
But I do think that working out with some heavy weights is, is a good thing to do. At least it is for me.
9:44
Some people do lightweights. And when I’m saying heavyweights, I’m not like throwing up to 25 and, and doing that like I, I think
9:51
I do like 135, like three sets of 10. That’s, that’s kind of like the, the heaviest I get sometimes if I’ve been going at it for a while
9:58
and, and I’ve improved my reps I can, I can get up to like one 65175, but that’s about it. Hey, for 44 years old, I’m pretty happy with that.
10:06
But what about the supplements? So I take 7 supplements each day.
10:12
Now again, if you’re thinking about doing these, I would definitely do your own research. Definitely talk to your doctor. Don’t rely on anything that I’m saying.
10:18
But first one that I take is Lion’s mane, which is supposed to be a cognitive enhancement.
10:25
In fact, most of these are, but Lion’s mane is widely known for his potential to improve memory function and focus.
10:32
They even say that it might even stimulate some production or nerve growth. I don’t know know if that’s true or not, but kind of cool if it is.
10:39
Also helps to protect against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, which it can’t be a bad thing if again, if that’s true in terms of mood and anxiety, it, it does have some calming effects.
10:50
It helps to reduce anxiety and, and, and if you’re having a pretty bad day on the market, might even help to reduce some depression.
10:57
So that’s one thing I do. Also, being in my 40s now too, one of the things that I have noticed is that my joints are starting to get more and more achy, which means again, sitting at the computer screens my my typing a lot throughout the day.
11:11
My hands start to hurt, my wrist start to ache, especially like when you have your hands on a mouse. I also buy these things called and this, this is a little bit off the cuff here, but I buy these things called Delta Hub Carpio, which is like these little things that you put on like the like the soles of your hands.
11:28
I guess it’s, I don’t know if that’s the right description, but it goes that area that goes right alongside the thumb that rests on on the desk when you’re typing on the keyboards.
11:37
They kind of move around on the desk, which is really hard to get used to them at first, but they’re from Delta hub.
11:42
I use them all everyday. Again, not a none of this stuff is anything I’m getting paid to tell you.
11:48
I’m just telling you what I use. But at first it’s very difficult to get used to them.
11:52
But now I can’t, I can’t work without them. But any case, I again, I’m getting a little bit sidetracked here.
11:58
What, what am I doing for the aches and pains that are, I feel like in my joints and not so much in my knees, but a lot of times in my wrist, my elbows, shoulders.
12:06
I’ve been taking an Omega-3 basically like the fish oil that you hear about. And that’s that’s good.
12:10
It’s supposed to be good for your brain function, your heart health, all that stuff. So another thing is swingtradingthestockmarket.com.
12:17
Yes, I’m trying to squeeze that in here with all these other supplements, but this is just a service.
12:22
This is what’s going to give you all the stock market research that I do each and every day. There’s a lot of things ioffer on shareplanner.com, but when you go to
12:29
swingtradeinthe-stockmarket.com, it’ll take you to SharePlanner and you’ll be able to see all the offerings.
12:32
But one in particular is the one that goes alongside of this podcast where you get all my stock market research that includes my daily watch list.
12:40
I’m gonna provide a daily watch list each day of the different stocks that I’m looking at potentially buying into.
12:45
Plus, I do a watch list review via video that I send out each day as well. So I wanna highlight what worked, what didn’t work from the watch list, what I’m doing with each of
12:54
them. That’s something I provide.
12:56
Plus I provide mega cap updates. I also provide stock market updates, all done via video.
13:01
And at the beginning of each week, I sent out my master bullish and bearish watch list for the week ahead.
13:05
Check that out. It’s a really cool service.
13:07
And you’re supporting this podcast in the process. OK, so I’ve told you about two of them so far.
13:12
I don’t even know if I say some of these things, right? So forgive me if I’m brutally mispronunciating the words, but the next one is ginkgo biloba.
13:20
And again, this is supposed to be for memory and focus helps to improve blood flow to the brain, which may help and enhance cognitive function or, or memory has some anti aging effects can help
13:32
with that age-related cognitive decline and, and prevent dementia or Alzheimer’s as well. So, you know, that kind of goes alongside of what the lion’s mane does as well.
13:40
So I take both of them. It’s an antioxidant as well, which can help with some stress.
13:46
Then I got the I really hope I say this right. And I’m looking at these tablets from the bottle of themselves.
13:51
But the next one is Ashwaga Honda. Ashwagandha, I don’t know, but I do take some of that as well.
14:00
Again, that helps with the stress and anxiety reduction. I think this is probably the one that focus the most on the stress and anxiety.
14:06
So I do take that. I have actually noticed a pretty good difference in my mental state as a result of these.
14:13
I think they’ve been pretty good for me, not that they my daughter gets a little bit worried for me about the Ashwaga Honda.
14:20
She reads up on some of the stuff on the Internet about some people saying, oh man, it just made me feel dead inside.
14:24
And that may be the case. It doesn’t make me feel dead inside.
14:27
I feel like it gives me a pretty, pretty good leveling of emotions and so forth, especially when it comes to the stock market.
14:32
But it definitely has helped my body adapt to stress levels from trading by reducing the cortisol levels, which gets linked to the anxiety and stress from from the daily trading.
14:41
So it gives you a little bit of energy and stamina supposedly as well. I don’t know if it really does because I’m also taking coffee in the morning along with the the the
14:50
5th supplement which is American ginseng, which is you know, purely for for the energy as well, so helps with the fatigue.
14:58
Sometimes I’ll take another one in the afternoon if the tea isn’t really kicking in for me. Also is supposed to be good for immune support.
15:04
Since taking these things that is one thing I’ve noticed. I have not been sick whatsoever, not even once.
15:10
That’s a good thing. The next one, hopefully I’m saying this run right as well.
15:15
Bacopa and all these I, I try to get the ones that are like organic. I don’t want something that’s just made in a laboratory and I know organics a little bit open-ended.
15:31
So maybe I am getting something that says it’s organic and it’s being made in a laboratory for all I know, who knows, But I still like to see the organic thing on there.
15:36
Oh gosh. So the Bacopa and you’re going to see a, a similar theme with all of these. They’re they’re really helped to improve memory.
15:44
One of the things I think as I get older, one of the things that worries me the most, I really, and I don’t have any family history of it, but I really don’t want to die from Alzheimer’s or dementia.
15:54
That just seems like kind of a lonely way to go where you’re just forgetting like the best of life that that was given to you.
15:59
But these are supposed to help with it. Now, obviously I won’t know that in the in the long run until I’m I’m dead from this world, whether
16:07
or not it actually kept me from ever getting it. But the Bacopa also helps to improve memory, learning, cognitive processing it.
16:15
I have noticed that my production during the day has gone up dramatically. Probably we buy like a third since I’ve been taking those.
16:23
I think that’s pretty good. I feel like I have a lot more energy and I don’t have the coming down off of anything that makes you
16:30
think, holy cow, it’s like the the other side of that caffeine boost. Like sometimes when you drink too much coffee or drink too much soda, you start to feel it on the
16:38
other side or one of those five hour energy boost you’re like, which by the way, I do not take any of those things.
16:43
I think those are pretty much made in the lab. But again, the, the bacopa has antioxidants, anti-inflammatory.
16:49
So that’s pretty good as well. They say it’s supposed to be neuroprotective, supposed to help reduce anxiety, lower stress, so
16:57
forth. So I take that as well.
16:58
So there’s seven supplements, the last one being turmeric. And my wife also buys turmeric from the grocery store.
17:03
She puts it in, she does a lot of juicing and she’ll get some of the turmeric. It looks like a root.
17:08
Basically she throws it in there, makes a juice out of it. But again, turmeric very good anti-inflammatory, good for brain health, helps to prevent
17:18
preventative or degenerative brain diseases. And of course, like like all these supposed to improve the cognitive function.
17:25
Now some people will will tell you they don’t work and I don’t, I don’t have a problem with them saying that it doesn’t.
17:30
So far I feel like the I haven’t taken any of them individually. So it’s hard for, I don’t necessarily want to because I feel like right now it does help in the way
17:39
that I hoped it would. And I didn’t go into this where it’s like, man, I feel like I’m always depressed or man, I’m having
17:46
mental issues. I don’t, I don’t have to deal with any of that, but I wanted to increase my mental sharpness, my
17:52
cognitive functions. And I think I feel like that those have definitely helped.
17:57
I don’t necessarily think that the Omega like for instance, the Omega fish oil does a lot for that process of it, but I’m not aching anymore.
18:03
Like the joints, joint aches have gone completely away. And I think a lot of that for a lot of this is, you know, the reason why I’ve gone towards this,
18:10
because if you would have asked me 10 years ago, would I be doing this kind of stuff, I would have been like, man, you’d have to be a total freak to do that kind of stuff.
18:16
But here I am. I’m doing it and kind of glad that I am.
18:19
I think some of it just rises more from my skepticism towards society today, towards politicians, towards the food industry, towards FDA, towards the health industry.
18:29
I have a strong belief that that the food industry does not want you to be healthy, to have options for a good food.
18:36
I think they want to make it as cheap as possible and to make you as addicted to it as possible. I remember when I used to eat a lot of fast foods.
18:42
That was what always sounded good to me. I went to go pick up some McDonald’s the other day for for one of my kids.
18:50
You know, they were really wanting some. I was like, all right, fine, I’ll get you 1/4 pounder and A and a fry.
18:55
And I tried one of the French fries. I’m like, Oh my gosh, this is disgusting.
18:58
I used to love the McDonald’s French fries, but I think getting off of it has actually made me realize just how poorly they taste.
19:07
I do that with like a bag of Doritos. We had some friends over for the house for one of the kids having a party at the house and somebody
19:14
brought Doritos. I grabbed a Dorito and shoot it.
19:16
Holy cow. I felt like it was eating cardboard with a bunch of powder on it.
19:20
So I’m not, I’m not trying to like sound Snooty or snotty or whatever. And I don’t look down on people for eating it, obviously.
19:25
But but I will say that I can tell the difference since making these changes, not Even so much with the supplements, but just like the stuff that I eat being more of like an ingredients based
19:35
household. My, my wife is an absolute beast in the kitchen.
19:39
And for those who are like, well, she probably stays at home and has time to do all that stuff. No, she works as long of hours as I do and she comes home and does that stuff.
19:46
I mean, she’s just, she’s a machine. And when they talk about marrying unicorns, I definitely married a Unicorn.
19:52
But those changes have definitely had an impact in my life, made me much better off as a result. So in response to Lucille’s question, like, do I have an edge?
20:00
I think yes, I would say there’s definitely an edge there for me at least. I can’t speak for everybody else and, and nor should you expect that I’m speaking for you.
20:09
But I do think that, you know, some of the supplements I’ve taken has definitely sharpened me cognitively.
20:15
And, and I wasn’t in a bad state before, but I, I could have, you know, I was definitely looking for maybe a little bit more memory function, remembering things.
20:23
I definitely think that’s improved, maybe not to the extent that I would like for it to improve, but then eating things like blueberries and raspberries and strawberries, I usually eat some of that
20:31
during the morning if I remember. And I think that that that plays a huge part in it too.
20:37
So a little bit of a different podcast episode today. I hope you enjoyed it.
20:40
And if you did, please make sure to leave me a five star review on whatever platform you’re listening to me on.
20:45

Welcome to Swing Trading the Stock Market Podcast!
I want you to become a better trader, and you know what? You absolutely can!
Commit these three rules to memory and to your trading:
#1: Manage the RISK ALWAYS!
#2: Keep the Losses Small
#3: Do #1 & #2 and the profits will take care of themselves.
That’s right, successful swing-trading is about managing the risk, and with Swing Trading the Stock Market podcast, I encourage you to email me (ryan@shareplanner.com) your questions, and there’s a good chance I’ll make a future podcast out of your stock market related question.
In today's episode, I start a two-part series on the rise of the retail trader and the growing impact they have in today's stock market. I also talk about how this impacts your trading and the stock market going forward.
Be sure to check out my Swing-Trading offering through SharePlanner that goes hand-in-hand with my podcast, offering all of the research, charts and technical analysis on the stock market and individual stocks, not to mention my personal watch-lists, reviews and regular updates on the most popular stocks, including the all-important big tech stocks.
