My Swing Trading Strategy

I booked profits in Nvidia (NVDA) yesterday for +4%. Looking back, I was very aggressive about taking profits at the open, but I did so, because I was not overly confident that it could hold on to the premarket strength, and seemed like a solid candidate for a gap and fade (which did not end up happening). I ended up adding another position that morning to the portfolio.

Indicators

  • Volatility Index (VIX) – The VIX is at closing lows that haven’t been seen since April 12th. Once it gets to these levels, the moves in the market are not all that impressive, so curb your expectations.
  • T2108 (% of stocks trading above their 40-day moving average): As the SPX closed at new all-time highs, the 7% rally in the T2108 wasn’t enough to push beyond its recent highs, creating therefore, a slight bearish divergence.
  • Moving averages (SPX): The 5-day and 10-day moving averages should cross back to the upside. SPX currently trading above all major moving averages.

Sectors to Watch Today

Technology is absolutely, the sector to be in right now, followed by Financials. The latter of which is nice, because most of the companies in that sector, at least the notable ones, have already reported earnings. Discretionary is coming alive, but that can all change if Amazon (AMZN) fails to produce a solid earnings number today. Staples has flat-lined, and Energy shows a double top has possibly formed – that sector as a whole, really isn’t worth your time.

My Market Sentiment

So far the earnings season has been another solid one for the market. Yeah, the Boeing (BA) number really hurt matters, but if you take that one out of the equation it has been very respectable and beyond expectations. But it is getting ready to really shake things up with the big tech firms reporting over the course of the next week, starting today with Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOG) and Intel (INTC)
