The real story of the crash began in bizarre feeder markets where the sun doesn't shine and the SEC doesn't dare, or bother, to tread: the bond and real estate derivative markets where geeks invent impenetrable securities to profit from the misery of lower--and middle--class Americans who can't pay their debts. The smart people who understood what was or might be happening were paralyzed by hope and fear; in any case, they weren't talking. Michael Lewis creates a fresh, character-driven narrative brimming with indignation and dark humor, a fitting sequel to his #1 bestseller Liar's Poker. Out of a handful of unlikely--really unlikely--heroes, Lewis fashions a story as compelling and unusual as any of his earlier bestsellers, proving yet again that he is the finest and funniest chronicler of our time.

Great book on the financial crisis

This is actually one of my favorite books from Micheal Lewis. This book takes you through a telling of the people who saw the financial crisis coming and how they dealt and made money from it. Either it was a really good book or I am a big nerd but I could not put this book down. Definitely a real page turner for me. A must read if you want another telling of the financial crisis.

Review

Pros
Take a walk through various traders lives during the housing bubble.
Cons
Deals with the side that saw and made money from the crisis. Need to see the story from the other side.

2nd Traunch of a Triple A rated Sub-Prime Mortgage Bond anyone?

Remember the days of the credit crunch? You know the crisis before the Euro debt, Middle East uprising, Obama still being popular, and the Ashton Kuchter - Demi Moore split.

Well, the Big Short skillfully chronicles the gargantuan collapse of the American sub-prime mortgage bond crisis by exposing those who thought that this amazingly profitable financial vehicle would just never stop. The author also recounts the stunningly accelerated collapse of Lehman Brothers, vilifies the culpable corporates (Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley - I mean really who else) and uncovers some unlikely traders (heroes?) who predicted the whole house of cards was about to unravel and were intrepid enough to make the trade based on their own technical analysis when the rest of the world was on the other side of the bet.

The book also touches on Howie Hubler the Morgan Stanley trader who lost US$9 billion in Credit Default Swaps and then walked away with a huge bonus even by Wall St standards. Howie currently holds the dubious record for the greatest single loss by a trader, nearly 5 times as much Nick Leeson who made the skill fashionable and who was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison.

But this is so much more than that just a stolid review of the history of peculiar events. It is an absolutely gob smacking page turning thriller and fully deserving of a read whether you're into the financial industry or not. Surely the movie of another Michael Lewis book is in the making. Who plays Howie - Ashton?

Review

Pros
Jaw dropping piles of cash created out of thin air resulting in even bigger jaw dropping losses.
Cons
A lot of technical stuff therein and page after page of “2nd traunch of triple A rated sub-prime mortgage bonds” can get a bit heavy after a while - but its worth the effort.
